A Trip to the Beach

As Ozzie is already nearly 18 months old we thought it about time that we introduce him to the great big OCEAN! So last week we took a little trip to Ocean Shores, a small town on the coast of Washington State. Boy did Ozzie have fun!

What a Mess!

Mr. Ed was out burning up some branches the other day and naturally Ozzie went along for the fun. In the process of this activity Oz decided to take a walk over to the swampy area where a little stream runs through…… see how “cute” he looks now!! It took me more than an hour to get the muck off him and restore (somewhat) his nice white feathers. Oh Ozzie, what are we going to do with you???

Ozzie Gets a Haircut

This time of year Ozzie gets so dirty you can’t believe it. There’s so much mud and grime around, to say nothing about the twigs and dried leaves that cling to that long silky coat. So yesterday I gave him a bath and today it was time for a haircut. Well…… now that he’s bigger and stronger he has more ways to avoid the various parts of the process. These include pulling his paws back to avoid getting toenail trims and clipper action between the toes, laying down so I can only get to one side at a time, and leaning against me with his whole body weight! We do have an elevated tub and table for grooming, complete with a leash to attach him to the wall, but he still works hard to avoid the clippers, scissors and combs. But I didn’t give up! And even though it’s far from perfect, Ozzie did get a new haircut today and is quite a handsome young man, don’t you think?

Best Friends??

Now Ozzie was raised with several litter mates up until we got him at the age of 2 1/2 months, so maybe he can be forgiven for trying to dog wrestle with Black Jack the Cat. Remember that Black Jack sometimes makes the mistake of thinking he’s a dog, and often cuddled up and slept with Poppy, especially in her declining months. But back to Ozzie and B.J.’s relationship….. Ozzie REALLY wants Jack to play and his favorite pastime is to run at the cat and launch himself through the air landing squarely on top of poor B.J. Never mind that B.J. could move… he doesn’t! Instead he cries as though Ozzie is killing him, bats unsuccessfully at the dog and stays right where he was on the floor. What’s he thinking? Here’s the picture of Ozzie launching himself at Black Jack and you can almost see the cat cringe as Ozzie takes off:

I’m soooo…. sleepy!

I should mention to put minds at ease that at 18 pounds Black Jack weighs nearly as much as Ozzie, so he’s in no danger at all. Still, if the play gets a little too rough Ozzie is stopped and Black Jack can remove himself (in a dignified fashion of course) and go take a little rest.

Ozzie and the Crate

Little Mr. Ozzie has amazed us with his willingness to sleep in his crate…. several friends feel it’s very unfair that he’s adjusted so quickly. (Smile) The first night Ozzie did put up a fuss when I went in to have a nice soak in the tub, but after I climbed into bed and his crate was right beside me he settled down. It seemed to help to put my hand down beside the door….he nuzzled and licked my fingers then went to sleep. First night was a five hour sleep and it’s been pretty much the same after that. I know he’ll go longer when his bladder is a little larger!

We’re using a borrowed crate right now, a smaller one than he’ll grow into later and have four to choose from so size won’t be a problem for Ozzie. But why sleep in a crate when you can cozy up on Mr. Ed’s lap?

Good-bye Miss Poppy

It’s with a sad heart that I pass along the news that our darling dog, Poppy, crossed the Rainbow Bridge on June 8th. It was so hard to see her go! But we knew the time had come and she can now see and hear and have a great time chasing around with her canine brothers Rider and Miles. Enjoy yourself Miss Popper-Girl our sweetheart dog. You’re now young again.

Introducing Ozzie

Good Afternoon,

Many of you are aware that we recently had to say good-bye to Poppy (aka Miss Popper-girl) and didn’t expect to have another dog until fall, or possibly even later. We were sad because not only did Poppy leave us but we lost our other two dogs within the last year…. one to cancer and the other through a blood platelet disorder called Thrombocytapenia. Details are on the site.

Anyway, we were fortunate in that someone decided against an available puppy from a litter previously all spoken for. Well, all I can say is their loss is our gain…. I think God sent us this little guy to heal the holes left in our hearts with the loss of Rider and Miles.

We’ve named our boy “Ozzie” with the more complete name “Ramblewood The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” and his fun and zany personality go right along with the new name. So far Ozzie has made friends with Black Jack the Cat, and that’s quite amazing in and of itself…. of course he’s captured our hearts as well and we’re having fun giving walks, playing on the floor with Ozzie and cuddling too.

Ozzie was born March 31, 2010 to “Gladys” and “Brooks” two wonderful champions from the Ramblewood Kennel. Little Ozzie is learning to sleep in his crate, chase toys and of course snuggle with Mr. Ed and I.

Jumping Through Hoops

Hello Friends,

Mr Ed and I are looking for a dog, in fact eventually there will be two dogs moving into our household… we hope!

Last week we decided to apply to adopt a dog from a rescue shelter and it was quite an eye-opener, for sure. Here’s the procedure: First you complete an application that is something like one you might complete in order to get a mortgage loan, or maybe a job. Lots of questions and even a requirement for references from the vet and a friend. Then your application is reviewed and you are interviewed by someone from the rescue shelter staff and a home visit may be scheduled to make sure your home is set up properly for this four footed friend you’re hoping to bring home. There are usually other families making applications too, so you’re somewhat in competition for “your” new furry friend. And finally, if you’re the winner, you pay a fee to the shelter and pick up the dog.

So there you have it…. and I just want to say that even though it’s quite arduous, I totally agree with the shelter’s adoption procedures. They are being very responsible to the dogs by requiring these steps be taken and assuring (as much as they can) that the dog will get a good home where they’re really wanted.

Oh, by the way, it didn’t work out for us with the dog we applied for as he was already being adopted by his foster family. But there’s another “furry kid” out there waiting for us so we’ll keep looking and making out applications!

And to our future pet we say: Wait for us…. we’re coming for you as soon as we can!
